1. PURPOSE OF THE VISIT The purpose of the v i s i t was as foll.ows: (I) t o make an assessment of s t a f f i n g l e v e l s required at. the biomedical workshop, Port Moresby ; (2) to assess t r a i n i n g requirements for biomedical engineering s t a f f ; (3) to carry out r e p a i r s on biomedical equipment 2. ACTIVITIES There is i n existence a t Port Moresby General Hospital a workshop for thc repair and maintenance of biomedical equipment. The workshop serves as the r e p a i r c e n t r e for the whole of Papua New Guinea. A t p r e s e n t , it i n s t a f f e d by f i v e a r t i s a n s . Four f o r the r e p a i r of biomedical equipment and one for d e n t a l equipment. Two p o s i t i o n s , onc of Senior Medical E l e c t r o n i c s Technical. Officer (SMETO) and one of Medical Electronics Technical O f f i c e r (WrO) a r e at present u n f i l l e d . These p o s i t i o n s a r e usually held by e x p a t r i a t e * in the absence of s u i t a b l y q u a l i f i e d n a t i o n a l s t a f f . Recruitment is under way overseas to f i l l . these p o s i t i o n s . The t e c h n i c a l l e v e l of the n a t i o n a l a r t i s a n s is low. At present complex r e p a i r and maintenance tasks are being undertaken by private companies. This is extremely costl,y and is considered, by government o f f i c i a l s the w r i t e r met, t o be a stop-gap mcasure u n t i l appropriate s t a f f have been r e c r u i t e d from overseas. There a r e many milliuns of kina worth of equipment t o r e p a i r and maintain i n Papua New Guinea and t h i s r e p o r t w i l l attempt t o i d e n t i f y ways t h a t t h f s s e r v i c e can be improved. S t a f f i n g l e v e l s and recommended workshop s i z e have been shown i n Annex 1.
