Excerpt: In a 1958 review of Robert Jungk’s then newly published Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, Hans Bethe was among those public figures, if not the first, to employ the term “big science” to characterize large-scale, government-sponsored postwar era American scientific and technical research and development.
