Description
The correspondents differ from each other in their inherent personalities and implied backgrounds, yet they are similar in their searching and in the views that result from their searches. One is portrayed as coming from a Western-based university while the other is more a quasi-monk in the Thai Buddhist tradition. Beginning from a basis of friendship that is implicitly based on regular meetings over the years prior to the correspondence, the emails are presented as having begun as a response to restricted travel such as was the case for the COVID pandemic.

Summary
‘Emails to and from Thailand’ is a spiritual conversation that ranges from the mundane to the profound. Spanning several years, the 33 or 34 interactions bring different lifestyles to bear on the subjects discussed, and in some cases reveal cultural differences. The main theme is one of searching for meaning. The correspondence does not reveal a meaning that can be taken away as a final word by a reader, but it does offer challenges to popular norms and unproductive social behaviours.

Excerpt
Hello my old friend. I hope all is well. We have had such engaging conversations over the decades, and I thought I might try to initiate a correspondence by email. Your comments on what I have said and written have been the most insightful I have received and caused me to deepen my thoughts. This is something for which I am always grateful - talking to you is almost like talking with my other-self. You are probably one of the few people that has read all my books. My writing has been an exercise to clarify my thoughts; I've been quite candid about this. So now, in this email, I'm doing the same thing in suggesting a means to clarify further my thoughts. It’s an ongoing process - at the conclusion of each book I feel I have clarified what I set out to, and then gradually that seems like just another stepping-stone to my next thoughts and questions. This doesn’t worry me, but it shows me the importance of continuous searching. So, my motivation in suggesting we open an email communication is somewhat selfish. If it's a burden just forget it. If it could be interesting and useful – I leave how it might work to you. No obligations!
