Description
Updating some publications not otherwise recorded in local histories

Summary
In this essay, I gather some history together with memories and information about Douglas-Daly Experiment Station (DDES) in both personal and professional terms. It is not a history although it contains some information not previously documented and might be used to amplify histories to be written across a wider period. Rather than a diary memoir the essay may be seen as an introductory review followed by snippets that have etched themselves in memory. Neither is it a technical bulletin, although it contains reference to and descriptions of some of the experimental work that I published, which like many items in the late pre-internet world, are not always readily accessible today. As part of a larger exercise to write about influential periods in my life in an ongoing project of self-understanding, this memoir while attempting to be objective is also necessarily subjective – and writing more than 50 years after my first association with DDES, residual thoughts are unlikely to be accurate, but are in any case what remains in my memory and my scant files.

Excerpt
In academic terms, these recollections amplify a modern history of DDES that concentrated on its later iteration as the Douglas Daly Research Farm (DDRF). That report aimed to present “a comprehensive record and overview of the large range of research projects that were carried out in response to the demand and development of the agricultural industry in the Douglas Daly region of the NT”. The period of the late 1960s through the 1970s was underrepresented in that history, probably due to problems of accessing information from imperfect local records impacted by damage from Cyclone Tracy, among other factors. However, before entering the period of my association with the region and DDES, it is important to know more about its origins.
