Introduction: PURPOSE This publication has been prepared under the direction of the Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force. It implements Department of Defense Directive 5025.12, Standardization of Military and Associated Terminology, which directs the use of Joint Publication 1-02, Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms, throughout the Department of Defense to ensure uniformity in the use of terms and definitions. The Air Force Glossary is a living document to be used in conjunction with JP 1-02, the Air Standard 85/1, Glossary of Terms and Definitions, and AAP-6, NATO Glossary of Terms and Definitions (English and French). APPLICATION This AFDD applies to all active duty, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, and civilian Air Force personnel. The doctrine in this document is authoritative, but not directive. Therefore, commanders need to consider the contents of this AFDD and the particular situation when accomplishing their missions. Airmen should read it, discuss it, and practice it.
