Over the years Member States ofthe WHO African Region have continued to address the need to strengthen national disease control programmes. One area of activity in this respect s the training of personnel in epidemiology. Origmally, interregional training programmes were organized by WHO outside the w o n , but in 1980, the Regional Committee for Africa, at its thirtieth session, adopted a resolurion requesting the Director-General and the Regional Duector to develop epidemiology training within the Regon Consultabve meetings were held in 1981 and arrangements made for a practical course in epidemiology lasting about 4 months. The first c o ~for, E nglish-speakingc ountries, sFFd in July 1982 in Nairob~ Kenya, and was followed by a slmlar course for French-speaking countries in Bamako, Mali, in July 1984. The semor level course is open to medical officers, dentists, veterinarians and experienced health workers in allied fields.
