1. INTRODUCTION AND AIM OF TUX MISSION The aim of this mlssion was to study, i n collaboration with responsible nationals, ways and means of accelerating the development and increasing the efficiency of dental health services by: - studying the epidemiology of oral and dental diseases; - revising methods of training and using the varioua categories of dental personnel. The personalities met are listed in annex 1. 2. DENTAL PROBLEMS 2.1 Epidemiology of oral and dental diseases On account of the limitations imposed by the length of thls miasfon, a short descriptive survey was decided upon and carried out among the most easily accessible population groups, namely schoolchildren and people attending outpatient clinics. Since the cutting of the sugar-cane had not yet begun. It was not possible to examine the sugar factory workers whom the author had intended to include in the survey. One hospital, one dispensary, two schools - one urban and one rural - were vislted in each of the nine administrative regions of Mauritius and Rodrigues; needless to say, problems of access entailed an unavoidable slant, since visiting the nine regions involved covering distances of 150 to 200 km per day for roughly three weeks. In the schools, we examined children aged 6 and 12 a t l a s t birtkday, which are significant ages for temporary and permanent dentition. In each case, 20 children, 10 g i r l s and 10 boys per age-group were chosen a t random and examined. In the hospitals and dispensaries, 20 adults - 10 women and 10 men - from 35 to 45 years old (the age of tooth stabilization) were chosen a t random among non-dental patients.
