Excerpt
Recent developments in the laboratory diagnosis of trachoma make it possible to conjirm the clinical diagnosis in a substantial number of cases and to demonstrate the presence of the agent even in the absence of overt clinical signs of active disease. A wider application of these methods would introduce an objective and quantifiable element into diagnosis and epidemiological studies. In order to be able to compare results, ho~~evear , certain degree of uniformity of methods is essential. In consideration of this and of the desirability of sharing some of the experience that has recently been acquired in certain laboratories, a WHO Symposium on the Laboratory Diagnosis of Trachoma was held in London in July 1974, jointly sponsored by the World Health Organization and the Institute of Ophthalmology, University of London.
