Excerpt
The best strategy for prevention of tuberculosis is to cure patients who have it. During the last decade a quiet revolution has taken place in treatment methods: short-term chemotherapy regimens have gradually won general acceptance in national antituberculosis programmes, both in high-prevalence developing countries as different as Algeria, Brazil, and Singapore and in low-prevalence industrial countries. The reason for this is very simple: these regimens are highly effective and reliable, and enable us to attain the objective of cure with the minimum of constraints either for patients or for health personnel (I).
