INTRODUCTION The objectives nf the programme were presented. These are: a. to undertake studies in patients with nonspecific back pain of undefinable origin. In particular ? these should exclude patients with disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis, tumours ur acute trauma. b. to develop outcome measures so as to allow comparability between different studies and which may be applied in different countries and cultures. Examples were given of problems with return to work in which the work requirements as well as the supporting agencies differ enormously between different countries and cultures.
