Excerpt
Definition of the problem Atheroma of the arteries causes coronary, cerebral and peripheral arterial disease, collectively called cardiovascular diseases. Atheroma involves the formation of plaques that thicken the walls of arteries of various sizes, owing mainly to the deposition of lipids and the formation of fibrous tissue. The alternative term athrosclerosis is used here because the lesion has a soft, lipid-rich part and a hard (sclerotic) fibrous part. The patchy thickening results in narrowing of the lumen of the arteries, often complicated by occlusive thrombosis, with consequent loss of blood supply, chronic ischaemia and the infarction of various organs and tissues
