Awards Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves

Karl Baacke (15 May 1907 – 1 April 1944) was an Oberstleutnant in the Wehrmacht during World War II, and one of only 882 recipients of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Karl Baacke is missing in action since 1 April 1944 in the Kamenets-Podolsky Pocket.

In zähen nächtlichem Kampf gegen einen in vorbereiteter Stellung stehenden Feind öffnete er mit einer beweglichen Abteilung eine wichtige Enge und erbeutete 24 Geschütze.[4] The captain of an infantry regiment Baacke, distinguished himself in the battles at Thermopylae. He deployed a maneuverable detachment and opened a vital narrow passage in a tough overnight battles against a well prepared enemy position and captured 24 guns.
Sunday, 21 June 1942 Vor Sewastopol haben sich der Kommandeur einer Radfahr-Abteilung, Major Baacke, sein Schwadronchef Oberleutnant Kupsch und der Chef einer Pionierkompanie Oberleutnant Stier, durch besondere Tapferkeit ausgezeichnet.[5] At Sevastopol, the commander of a bicycle department, Major Baacke his squadron leader Lieutenant Kupsch and the head of a pioneer company Lieutenant Stier, have distinguished themselves by exceptional bravery.
