Na Kamalei-K. E. E. P. — Koolauloa Early Education Program is a Native Hawaiian nonprofit organization that includes Hoala Na Pua, a parent-child interaction and family education program that services the families of Koolauloa, Oahu, Hawaii. pictures for their books. Each book is published in the official languages of Hawai‘i: Hawaiian and English. Blends of ancient and modern Hawaiian words were included within the texts of our stories. The use and spelling of selected words, while commonly used by the residents of Koolauloa Oahu, may not be as typical in other regions of Hawai‘i. The Houlu Hou Project: Stories Told By Us participants have strived to retain the correct usage of the Hawaiian language within the processes and the pages of our stories. These books for all the children are lovingly dedicated to Auntie Maxine Kahaulelio, founder of Na Kamalei, Keoana Hanchett, Na Kamalei’s first program director, and Kawai Aona-Ueoka. The name Alligator Pond is celebrated by the imagination of the children of Hau‘ula: that this rock formation resembles the body of an alligator. No one knows where the name originated. This beach area has been known as Alligator Pond for a very long time. Alligator Pond is a special place for the children and parents of this area. Fifty years ago I began my graduate studies in order to become a professor of English. Among the requirements for the master's degree was the necessity of writing a thesis. I chose as a topic "Henrik Ibsen and Nordic Myth." There were several reasons for choosing that topic. As an undergraduate I had taken a course with Philip Wheelwright based upon his manuscript of "The Burning Fountain" and became interested in mythology. I subsequently spent a year at a Danish folk college, whose headmaster gave daily lectures on the pagan mythology of the Nordic folk. Until the 1950s not much had been done on the relationship between Ibsen and Nordic myth. In the words of Pavel Frænkl: From the myth and legend [of his early works] to the "domestic" subjects [of his later dramas] Ibsen's death imagery is consistently determined by Nordic mythology and rite. AGAINST THE WAR follows the intertwined lives of four friends, rowing team mates, who graduate from college at the height of the Vietnam War and struggle to make decisions about the war and the military draft. Two become involved in the war, one as a combat pilot and one as a medic. The other two of the four friends, in trying to avoid the war, become involved in the “war on poverty,” the anti-war movement, and the counterculture that arises from the anti-war movement.
