Facsimile of the 1st Edition: Manual of Style The history of The Chicago Manual of Style spans more than one hundred years, beginning in 1891 when the University of Chicago Press first opened its doors. At that time, the Press had its own composing room with experienced typesetters who were required to set complex scientific material as well as work in such then-exotic fonts as Hebrew and Ethiopic. Professors brought their handwritten manuscripts directly to the compositors, who did their best to decipher them. The compositors then passed the proofs to the “brainery”—the proofreaders who corrected typographical errors and edited for stylistic inconsistencies. To bring a common set of rules to the process, the staff of the composing room drew up a style sheet, which was then passed on to the rest of the university community. 1848, Kamehameha III granted fee-simple interest of Kalialinui to a chiefly steward, Kamaikaaloa (Kamaikaaloa), who held the land through the remainder of his lifetime, and subsequently conveyed it to his heirs. Kalalawalu—daughter of Kamaikaaloa and Kealohaaukai—and her husband, Douglas Panee, sold the land of Kalialinui to Haleakala Ranch in 1888. Most of Kalialinui, including the land that became the Waikamoi Preserve, has been held by Haleakala Ranch since that time. In the later 1800s and early 1900s, cowboys of the Haleakala Ranch traveled from the lower Kula lands to the mountain lands of Haleakala via the “Aina Hou Trail,” passing Halemau (Halemauu) and Leleiwi, and through Kalialinui, towards the Koolau Gap lands. In olden times, travel through them was accompanied by prayer, and care. Traditions tell us that many a careless traveler, or collector of resources, found themselves lost in a maze of overgrowth and dense mists as a result of disrespectful and careless actions. In the Hawaiian mind, care for each aspect of nature, the kino lau (myriad body-forms) of the elder life forms, was a way of life. This concept is still expressed by Hawaiian kupuna (elders) through the present day, and passed on in many native families. Also, in this cultural context, anything which damages the native nature of the land, forests, ocean, and kino lau therein, damages the integrity of the whole. Thus caring for, and protecting the land and ocean resources, is a way of life. In the traditional context above referenced, we find that the forests and mountain landscape—the native species, and the intangible components therein—are a part of a sacred Hawaiian landscape. The intimate connection between Hawaiians and aina (land) is the focus of two articles this year. In a piece that weaves together scholarly research and personal moolelo (storytelling), cultural beliefs about land, language, and community reveal strong implications for understanding Hawaiian well-being. Likewise, the importance of cultivating a strong sense of place among students and their families is emphasized within Ike Aina, a curriculum grounded in experiential learning and indigenous literacy. This year is a mixture of joy and nostalgia personally, because it is my last year as editor as I turn the reins over to Brandon Ledward, who has been a diligent team member working to produce volumes four and five of this journal. Molokai: Future of a Hawaiian Island This vision statement was created by numerous groups of the Molokai community and largely based on work from the generations before us. There are too many contributors to list, but on page 52, there is a hui of opio and makua who are instrumental in carrying forward the vision of this document, and they may be contacted for further information. In light of longstanding challenges to our aina (land), cultural tradi- tions, and lifestyle, community members joined together to articulate a vision for the future of Molokai. The process was innovative yet organic, bringing together individuals from different generations and with ike (knowledge) from a wide range of sources. The emerging document describes a desired state for the island, where the question of development is secondary to the promise to malama (protect and nurture) natural and cultural resources. A Hawaiian proverb says, “Ho ae ka ike heenalu i ka hokua o ka ale,” or “show your knowledge of surfing on the back of the wave. ” This saying suggests that talking about ones knowledge and skill is not enough; let it be proven (Olelo Noeau, 1013). As researchers, we like the process of discovery. We thrive on evidence. We design surveys and studies to find evidence that confirms our hunches. We want to test whether a certain theory is valid and meaningful. We want to identify relationships, show causality where possible, and grow and learn together from the growing evidence base of knowledge about our people.
