“Here you are,” says Suzy as she walks into the lounge carrying Doug's dinner; “looks like you have had a hard day.” she says as she sees the frown on Doug's face. “Hard day? You don’t know the half of it.” he snaps as he stares into her eyes not attempting to take the tray from her hands. “We are not going to argue are we? Come on, I have cooked your favourite roast dinner.” Suzy replies holding the tray out towards him. Doug stands up and knocks the tray out of Suzy's hands slapping her on the face before the tray hits the floor; “What are you after?” he demands in a cruel voice. “I want a quiet evening for a change.” she screams back. Doug punches her hard on the shoulder as she turns away and only succeeds getting as far as the fireplace; when he grabs her hair, twisting it viciously. Pulling up outside the corner shop Suzy is pleased to see it empty of customers inside and gets out the car quickly; locking it she enters the shop and makes her way to the coffee and sugar. The supermarket seems too much for her at the moment and Suzy picks up a large jar of coffee and two bags of sugar. Taking them to the till she puts them on the counter and walks over to the fridge picking up two large bottles of full fat milk and returns to the counter as the lad who is serving, totals them up on the till. Paying her money Suzy says a polite 'Thank you' and arms loaded with her shopping walks out to the car. Putting the milk down onto the pavement Suzy unlocks the car and puts the coffee and sugar onto the back seat. As she picks up the milk a Volkswagen Polo pulls up close to her car and parks. When Polynesian people came to Hawaii, hundreds of years ago, they brought legends. We know this because the same stories and similar hero names are found in other Polynesian groups. Other legends grew about historical events in our islands, about real people and places. Some are very old while others have grown in recent times. As all these stories were told and retold changes crept in. While the main story was the same, details became very different. No one can say that one version of a story is right and the others wrong. At the end of each legend I have given the principal source used. I, too, have made changes. Many of these stories are about chiefs, for they led a varied and colorful life and the common people liked to hear about them. In old Hawaii each valley, from mountain to sea, was a district with its district chief. Sometimes one chief made himself ruler of several districts or of an entire island. Thus he became a high chief with lesser chiefs under him. We tell and read legends not only for enjoyment but also because they help us understand people who lived long ago....

This moderately sized novel opens before the reader, with an episode that took place during the very first halt, by a group of very intimate three unwed oldies, all retired college teachers of Delhi University. They were on a pleasure trip from Delhi to Kosani, a tourist resort situated in the Kumayun Hills a range of the Himalayas in the North of India. After having driven over a hundred kilometers relating to this journey, they had halted for refreshment at a place, where one of them is accosted by the owner of the roadside `Dhaba` (an indigenous restaurant). It triggers the person accosted to recall his boyhood days. Again, at their destination, the other one is accosted by an ex-girlfriend of his, in the distant past. The `trio` who are given to such type of tours, happen to meet two other ladies almost at the same time, while staying in a very beautiful zone of Goa. Again, the wife of one’s brother-in-law is also called sister-in-law, subject however to the condition that the said brother-in-law is not the husband of one’s own sister. Thus, in Indian society, we find a vast variety of sister-in-law. However, one factor of commonality is often found in the cases where at both ends of this relationship, we have females. The say that this factor provides sauce to our family life, by swift maneuvers of their inimical or endearing postures towards each other. The author has picked up every variety of this relationship from the middle-class stratum of Indian society, while sketching his story for this fictional narration.
