Introduction: Cancer is not randomly distributed among the human population (I), rather, both environmental (2) and genetic (3-5) factors strongly influence its occurrence. Lung cancer is a specific example of a neoplasia whose occurrence i s nonrandomly distributed. Its incidence is often associated with cigarette smoking (6), but the actual role that tobacco smoke or smoke-related chemicals play in this association is unclear.
