Excerpt
Introduction: As a result of the roasting operation in goldmining at the Obuasi Goldmine huge volumes of poisonous smoke of arsenous oxide and sulfur oxides incessantly pour out of the giant 186-ft. mine chimney onto the surrounding countryside and render it brown and barren. This defoliation is not confined to the immediate periphery of the mine but extends about 5 miles to the north and about 2 miles to the northeast of the chimney. Some of the palm trees within about half a mile of the chimney look as if they have been burnt by fire.
