Excerpt
A healthy start in life Great strides have been taken over the past decade to protect and care for the millions of children who are in danger of dying or suffering from common diseases in the fi rst few years of life. Improved medical treatment together with greater access to health care have helped to reduce childhood deaths considerably in parts of the developing world over the past ten years. But it’s not all good news. In some parts of the world, the number of children dying has actually increased. Many of these children were not seen at a health facility. In Tanzania, as many as 40% of children who died were never taken for treatment, while in Bolivia, the fi gure rises to 74%. Clearly, advances in medical treatment alone are not enough to reach nearly 11 million children who die every year before their fi fth birthday.
