Paradoxism's Main Roots

By: Florin Vasiliu

In the year 1983 issued at Fes in Morocco the volume of poems Le sens du non-sens (Edit Express) by the young Romanian mathematician and poet Florentin Smarandache. The author taught mathematics between the years 1982-1984 at 'Sidi EI Hasan Lyoushi' College in Setrou based on a contract between Romania and Morocco. The book contains a nonconformist manifesto for 'a new literary movement: The Paradoxism'. No doubt it is a connection among the title of book, the inner poems and the content of this programmatic manifesto of a literary movement entitled explosibly 'paradoxistic'. A look-in through the poems makes a strange feeling like an invisible hand troubling the spirit: 'RaIn'. finger. beat the windows / No more can I .Ing / The words are unbearable / no more flower' no more car / no more oxen cart'. (Cantand in ploaie) , or: -It Is hard to me to be a common man /1 exist against me / My heart became a part of my bnin /1he forehead has 1he diameter / of the sky ... ' (Exist impotriva mea), or: "The poet lights a candle /In his skull! and It burn., It burns there / with flame' Through his eyes two sparrows / take out their little bea...

Classic Hangman (video game)

By: Retro Gamer

The word to guess is represented by a row of dashes, giving the number of letters, numbers and category. If the guessing player suggests a letter or number which occurs in the word, the other player writes it in all its correct positions. If the suggested letter or number does not occur in the word, the other player draws one element of the hanged man stick figure as a tally mark. The game is over when: An example game in progress; the answer is Wikipedia. The guessing player completes the word, or guesses the whole word correctly The other player completes the diagram: This diagram is, in fact, designed to look like a hanging man. Although debates have arisen about the questionable taste of this picture,[1] it is still in use today. A common alternative for teachers is to draw an apple tree with ten apples, erasing or crossing out the apples as the guesses are used up. The exact nature of the diagram differs; some players draw the gallows before play and draw parts of the man's body (traditionally the head, then the torso, then the arms and legs one by one). Some players begin with no diagram at all, and drawing ...

Bingo!

By: Nicolae Sfetcu, Compiler

A short guide about what is and how to play bingo, the game in United Kingdom, and its major variations. Since its invention in 1934, modern bingo has evolved into multiple variations, with each jurisdiction’s gambling laws regulating how the game is played. There are also nearly unlimited patterns that may be specified for play. Some patterns only require one number to be matched, up to cover-all games which award the jackpot for covering an entire card and certain games award prizes to players for matching no numbers or achieving no pattern. Bingo is often used as an instructional tool in American primary schools and in teaching English as a foreign language in many countries. It became increasingly more popular across the UK with more purpose-built bingo halls. Keno is an important variation of bingo game, often played at modern casinos, and also offered as a game in some state lotteries. Scratchcard is another major variation. The scratchcard is a small token, usually made of cardboard, where one or more areas contain concealed information: they are covered by a substance (usually latex) that cannot be seen through, ...

Elstron Table Games : The Rules of Play

By: Mu Pi Chan

The table games described in this book are based traditional tables games which have been modified to fit into a fantasy world where the inhabitants use a duodecimal numbering system (Base 12), and for whom the hexagon and numbers which are multiples 6 are of fundamental importance. When developing these table games the aim was to produce games with simple rules (easy to learn) which lead to complex outcomes (hard to master). Or to put this another way games which are non-trivial and require skill to play....

The games described in this book originally started life as part of a novel about the fantasy island of Tarron and the hominoid races (Elstron, Assen, Durns, and Jowr) that inhabited it. Within this fantasy novel The College of Arnur, in the Elstron Kingdom of Westron, played a key role in the story. The College of Arnur can best be described as a cross between a monastery and a university, within which the Table Games described in the first four sections of this book played an important role in the development of the students. The Other Games described in the fifth section were not used formally by The College of Arnur, being games more commonly played in the Castles, Halls, Inns, and Taverns of the Elstron Kingdoms of Westron, Stron, and Eastron. The purpose of this book (Volume 1) is to define the rules of the Elstron Table Games. A second book (Volume 2) will describe how these games evolved, including the games they were developed from and the sources used, along with the story of their historical development and cultural importance within the Elstron Kingdoms. The approach taken in this book (Volume 1) to defining the ru...

Meditations on the Parables and Miracles of Our Lord Jesus Christ

By: Keith Wayne Phillips

This book was written over a three year period while in sessions of Adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament. I first read and then summarized each Parable, or Miracle, and then added some brief comments concerning each one. Presented in an easy to read and orderly format, this book covers sixty-six events listed as either a Parable or a Miracle in my New American Bible (1986). I have written what has come to me while in Adoration. I have made no research, or study, into what others have written on these topics, as I wanted to see what would come to me through my own thinking process, and through God’s graces. This is meant to be a simple book of reflections; something that anyone could use for study, or meditation, as St. Alphonsus has asked us to do. ...

-The seed, of course is the Word, Jesus Christ, sent by the Father. This seed was sown in each of our hearts –it is part of us-but it can be stolen away by the devil. We can also reject the Word when persecution or hardship comes because of our belief in Jesus. It becomes too much trouble and we can be lured into taking an easier path. -We can also lose our faith and trust in Jesus and begin to think that we must create our own salvation through riches and distractions. But those that hear the Word and truly understand it realize that this understanding has been granted as a gift from God, and only because of God and this gift, can we ever produce much fruit. We cannot bear fruit without God’s assistance. His path and His Word is the one true life....

Wild Habits of Reluctance

By: Lawrence Cottrell

...A cycle of poems of yes and no, rumors of life dancing on this islet sphere riding the blind career of outward motion. These rhymes are threnodies and hosannas among nurseries and crypts, hummings to fright hants habiting dingy trails through a wilderness, attempts to stay awhile this side the lichgate by becoming a gossip for the ineffable. They are a literary aesthetic concerning the quicksilver bric-a-brac on the shelves of this what-not of becoming, a naming of smoke, a grasping at echoes, that I might hide in posterity's pocket another day, another night, beyond the terrible hunger of the past's insatiable forgetting. They are wild habits of reluctance. ...

Tetris (video game)

By: Retro Gamer

Tetris (Russian: Те́трис, pronounced [ˈtɛtrʲɪs]) is a Soviet tile-matching puzzle video game originally designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov. It was released on June 6, 1984, while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow. He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game's pieces contain four segments) and tennis, Pajitnov's favorite sport. It is also the first entertainment software to be exported from the USSR to the US and published by Spectrum HoloByte for Commodore 64 and IBM PC. The Tetris game is a popular use of tetrominoes, the four-element special case of polyominoes. Polyominoes have been used in popular puzzles since at least 1907, and the name was given by the mathematician Solomon W. Golomb in 1953. However, even the enumeration of pentominoes is dated to antiquity. The game (or one of its many variants) is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system, as well as on devices such as graphing calculators, mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs, Network music players and even as an Easter eg...

A Vocabulary of Words in the Hawaiian Language

By: Lahainaluna

Perhaps the Sandwich Island’s Mission owes an apology to the literary world for having reduced to writing a language of such variety and extent as the Hawaiian, and published so many books on it, without having given any account either of the genius, structure or peculiarities of the language. Many reasons, however, exist why so little has been done in this respect. The want of leisure in any member of the Mission for setting down to labors purely literary, is one reason. The want of proper materials heretofore, for authority, is another. But the reason that has had the greatest influence is, the (act that those who came first on the ground and acquired the language by the ear and by mixing with the natives, soon became independent of helps and needed neither a vocabulary or a grammar of the language: and those who came later, and most needed such helps, felt that they were not well qualified for the task of making them. But however the majority of the Mission may feel with regard to an apology in their behalf, the compiler of the following Vocabulary feels that an explanation is due from him respecting the manner in which the work...
