The struggle of the Central Asians to preserve this dastan in the face of Soviet attacks upon it is the central focus of the present work. The attacks and attempts to save the Alpamysh dastan may be divided into two "phases" -- the first is represented by the Central Asians' own efforts to record the dastan on paper and publish it widely in response to Russian occupation and ensuing Russification campaigns, Christian proselytization, "language reform," boundary revision and creation of special legal classifications and later, "nations," for Central Asians; the second "phase" involves altering the content of the dastan itself and its history or "lineage." I witnessed many horrid crimes against humanity but also experienced the courage, dignity, and resilience of those who suffered and struggled all around me, including my own family. We were bombed for 57 nights during the blitz. We, the Cockney's, lived by a code of honor, do as you would be done by. We believed in a fair sense of justice and were victims of social inequality. There were two wars, one for the rich and the other for the poor working class and the poor. There was no middle class in those days. While we were squashed and hungry in filthy metal dugouts in our backyards, the effluent continued their life of luxury in the elite hotels. Some of them even moved in permanently as they were left helpless without their servants. You see their servants had all gone off to war as fodder in the front line, to fight for their country. I and many others survived the incessant bombings, that rained down on us like hailstones from a thundercloud. I am now 94 years old and living in Australia....

It was in fun rather than on any authority of research that I answered a question, ‘What is the motto of the Limmer family’? I replied, ‘Teneo Vestrum Caput Tenus’, which roughly translates as ‘keep your head down as far as…’ The task of filling in the dots is yours. 'The Grindstone' certainly fits the dots. Limmers certainly gained a hallmark of hard workers down the ages. 'The parapet' also fits, for there were few that spoke out too loudly on controversial subjects.
