El Godfrey: The Canta Barcariola of Dr. Thomas Mondini and the Arguments on Every Song of an unknown author.
Popular songs with their original music.
These 101 songs are all postmissionary and owe their musical origin to missionary hymns. None of them are technically chants but some, such as " 'Alika," "Hole Wai-mea," and "Maika'i Kaua'i," are chants that have been edited and set to music. The songs date from the mid-1850's to 1968—the date of Mary Kawena Pukui's Christmas song translations. The majority are from the time of the monarchy and so are already somewhat venerable. Nearly all are sung often today and are well known to Hawaiian singers. The texts have never before been written consistently with the glottal stops and macrons that make them nearly pronounceable by one not knowing Hawaiian. Many of them have not been translated before, or have been freely adapted rather than translated. Rarely have so many been assembled under one cover....

Previous to the year 1906 the researches of the Bureau were restricted to the American Indians, but by act of Congress approved June 30 of that year the scope of its operations was extended to include the natives of the Hawaiian islands. Funds were not specifically provided, however, for prosecuting investigations among these people, and in the absence of an appropriation for this purpose it was considered inadvisable to restrict the systematic investigations among the Indian tribes in order that the new field might be entered. Fortunately the publication of valuable data pertaining to Hawaii is already provided for, and the present memoir by Doctor Emerson is the first of the Bureau's Hawaiian series. It is expected that this Bulletin will be followed shortly by one comprising an extended list of works relating to Hawaii, compiled by Prof. H. M. Ballou and Dr. Cyrus Thomas....

It is the purpose of this series of articles to attempt a resolution on these questions by reviewing the ethnological history of the Hawaiian peoples as contained in their ancient traditions, rituals and epic poetry. It is the purpose of these articles to present the Hawaiian royal traditions unconfounded by the elements and theology of Christianity or the insidious influence of other cultural philosophies. It is our purpose to relate what will substantially be the same history, prayers, and chants that for innumerable centuries were recited by the Hawaiian priesthood of the Order of Io and the worship of Kane. If, as inevitably it must, there shall rise a conflict of thought between these articles and the preponderant opinion of modern anthropological research, we shall only be able to resolve or at least to mitigate these differences by restating our purpose of presenting the history of the Hawaiian from his own viewpoint. To accomplish this, we shall adhere strictly to our primary source of material, the Song of Eternity (He Koi Honua No Ke Aha Alii, Ka Halau Kapu O Keawe) of the Royal and Sacred House of Keawe, traditional ru...
The Song of Eternity, never before disclosed to the public, is a series of heroic epics and liturgies. The last time that it was recited in its entirety was at the necrological ceremonies attending the funeral of the beloved Prince William Charles Lunalilo, King of Hawaii and sixth of the Dynasty of Kamehameha. Lenthy portions of it, however, have been chanted at other similar ceremonies, the most prominent of these being the coronation of David Kalakaua, and the furierals of the Queens, Emma and Liliuokalani; of the Princes William Leleiohoku, David Kawananakoa, and Albert Kunuiakea, and of the High-Chiefesses Kehauluohi II, Ruth Keelikolani, Peleuli Crowningburg-Amalu, Elizabeth Kekaaniau Pratt, and others. It may also be of interest to know that various of its liturgies were chanted at the ceremonies which elevated Archibald Cleghorn and John Owen Dominis as Princes of the Realm and which created the late Henry Gaylord Dillingham as a High-Chief of Hawaii in the Order of Kaleiwohi....
This volume brings together expressions of abiding devotion to Hawai i—the land, the ruling monarchs, the independent and sovereign kingdom. Many of these expressions are direct responses to the turmoil of the late 19th century, in particular the 1887 promulgation of the Bayonet Constitution that disenfranchised so many subjects of the Hawaiian kingdom, the 1889 revolt that attempted to reverse the erosion of those civil rights, the 1893 overthrow of Queen Lili uokalani, and the counterrevolution in 1895 by loyalists trying to restore the Queen to the throne. In late 1895, Francisco Jose Testa, editor of Ka Makaainana, collected 105 mele together in one volume to be published as Buke Mele Lahui. Testa, known as “Hoke” in Hawaiian, refers to these compositions as “mele aloha aina,” patriotic songs or songs of loyalty. Outpourings of such loyalty to the kingdom and monarchy were cast poetically and published regularly in pro-royalist Hawaiian-language newspapers of the time, especially Hawaii Holomua, Ka Lei Momi, Ka Leo o ka Lahui, Ka Makaainana, and Nupepa Ka Oiaio. Although Testa's introduction states that these texts we...
