Wright Flyer Paper : Unmanned Intratheater Airlift, Vol. 45

By: Major Kevin J. McGowan, USAF

This paper investigates the DOD’s tactical logistical challenges and each service’s tactical lift requirements, especially with respect to the movement of supplies from forward supply hubs to forward forces. To address these challenges and requirements, the author suggests the use of remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) as a potential solution. Focusing on existing and quickly emerging technologies as well as the joint operating requirements, the author proposes RPA performance and design characteristics along with a concept of employment that increases tactical lift capabilities and meets all current service requirements....

Mosquitoes to Wolves : The Evolution of the Airborne Forward Air Controller

By: Gary Robert Lester

By the end of the Vietnam War, advances in technology allowed these FACs to control strikes against targets at night, in bad weather, and with improved precision. Laser-guided weapons systems, new computer navigation equipment, and advanced ground radars combined to provide an effective and lethal capability. If the Mosquitoes were an annoyance in Korea, the Wolves of Vietnam proved to be a deadly addition to the concept of FAC....

Hale's Handful . . . Up from the Ashes : The Forging of the Seventh Air Force from the Ashes of Pearl Harbor to the Triumph of VJ-day

By: Major Peter S. H. Ellis, USAF

This study analyzes the evolution of Seventh Air Force’s joint command and control (C2) relationships as well as the development of joint operational procedures and doctrine in the Central Pacific during World War II. As this was arguably the most joint theater in World War II, there are many lessons about the challenges of joint C2 and the development of joint combat procedures that are relevant to contemporary airmen....

AFRI Research Paper 2008-1, Expansion or Marginalization : How Effects-Based Organization Could Determine the Future of Air Force Space Command

By: Edward B. “Mel” Tomme, D. Phil

The importance of combat effects in warfare has no second. However, most combat effects would never be delivered without crucial information delivered from combat support forces. In this time of turbulent recapitalization and reorganization within the Air Force, the critical nature of combat and combat support effects must remain foremost in our decisions as we create new commands, place people and resources where needed, and forecast budgets....

Leading Air Mobility Operations in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies

By: Lieutenant Colonel Eileen M. Isola, USAF

A huge portion of the military burden in support of these operations falls on the shoulders of the Mobility Air Forces (MAF). Lt Col Eileen M. Isola’s Leading Air Mobility Operations in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies provides just such an educational foundation for MAF war fighters charged with leading CHEs. She provides a superb synthesis of a dozen years of lessons learned from many resources and institutions, sifting through the tactical and operational lessons learned so as to focus her research into the most important tenets for strategic success in a CHE: build a team of teams, gather and share information (not “intelligence”), and establish centers for interagency success. She reviews key joint and service doctrine manuals, culling critical nuances that would likely be overlooked by war fighters new to the CHE environment, or rushed in a crisis deployment. Her cultural comparison of the military and nongovernmental organizations is insightful and valuable. Throughout her work Colonel Isola provides tangible, real examples from past operations of what worked and what did not—and why. The implications for the future are clear...

"Outside the Box" Space and Terrestrial Transportation and Energy Technologies for the 21st Century

By: Theodore C. Loder III, Ph.D.

This paper reviews the development of antigravity research in the US and notes how research activity seemed to disappear by the mid 1950s. It then addresses recently reported scientific findings and witness testimonies - that show us that this research and technology is alive and well and very advanced. The revelations of findings in this area will alter dramatically our 20th century view of physics and technology and must be considered in planning for both energy and transportation needs in the 21st century....

ET Contact : The Implications for Post Contact Advancements in Science and Technology

By: Theodore C. Loder III, Ph.D.

The implications for scientific and technological advancements after open contact with advanced ET civilizations are based on an analysis of a combination of the technologies needed to visit Earth, the willingness of ETs to share knowledge, and multiple reports by contactees on what they observed and what they were told. There is also the problem of the willingness of human groups to share what they have already learned, but have kept suppressed for many decades. These will probably include many of the technologies that ETs have also developed. The five areas of interest covered will be transportation (including anti-gravity), energy production (including over unity devices), communication (including both super-luminal devices and consciousness communication), medical (including cures for human illnesses and resulting life extension), and consciousness (including a better understanding of our spiritual nature). In other words, there will be significant changes in many areas of human endeavor once open acknowledged contact has occurred, and there will be no “going back”. Ultimately this will be a “very good thing”....

Hulili Vol. 4 No. 1 2007

By: Shawn Malia Kanaiaupuni, Ph. D.

It is with great humility and pride that I take pen in hand to submit the newest issue of Hulili to you. Even in this day and age of sophisticated technology and rapid pace, one of the most amazing and inspiring things about being human is the power of the spirit and the depth of connections that it brings, binding us to each other, to animate and inanimate life forms, to the past of our ancestors, and yet so vigorously to the future. From these connections come our values, and this fourth volume of Hulili speaks strongly about Hawaiian values. The writings carry clear messages about kuleana (responsibility), imi naauao (seeking knowledge), and the importance of olelo (language) and ohana (family). Our contributors voice the tremendous kuleana to revitalize the knowledge of our ancestors, using it to create a vision for our future as conveyed in the powerful moolelo (story) about the rebirth of voyaging in Hawaii, about the undeniable responsibility to care for our kupuna (elders), our iwi (bones), our wahi pana (sacred places), and about building the strength of our communities through the power of culture-based ed...

Every journey begins with a dream, a vision that can unite others. When people come together around a set of shared values, they can achieve extraordinary things. It is true that every voyage has its share of hardships. Sometimes the challenges come from outside the community, and other times they come from within. Most often they come from inside ourselves, stemming from feelings of fear and inadequacy. We rely on our teachers and leaders to guide us through times of crisis, to inspire hope, and to point us toward new horizons. This essay pays tribute to the visionaries, teachers, and leaders of the Hawaiian voyaging movement. For me, these powerful teachers are Mau Piailug, Herb Kane, Eddie Aikau, and my greatest teacher, my father, Myron Thompson....
